First 'Beverly Hillbillies' bad enough: 'Montani semper stereotype' strikes W.Va. once again

THE year was 1964 and the place was Torrance, Calif., a few milessouth of "fabulous Hollywood."

I was visiting my brother when one of his neighbors came by tocheck out the kid from West Virginia.

"And what do you do in West Virginia?" she asked.

I told her I was a university student majoring in journalism.

"And have you had any journalism experience?" she asked.

I told her that the previous summer I had worked as a news internat a television station.

"In West Virginia? Oh! They have television in West Virginia?" sheasked.
