Fed: Labor won't back down on mandatory detention - WA senator

CANBERRA, Feb 12 AAP - The federal opposition would continue to work on its asylumseekers policy but would not back down on mandatory detention, Labor Senator Jim McKiernansaid today.

"At the end of the day, mandatory detention for those that arrive unlawfully on ourshores, will remain," the Western Australian senator, who retires in July, told reporters.

He said there was great feeling within the party about the issue.

"But I think the formulation of good policy, policies that the Labor Party can bringinto action when we win government, they will come to the fore," Senator McKiernan said.
