Deal struck on homes

DEPUTY Prime Minister John Prescott has rubberstamped a compromisedeal to agree how many new houses should be built in SouthGloucestershire by 2011.

An agreement to fix the quota for the former Avon area was finallythrashed out last December after years of wrangling between councilsand the Government.

It settled on 16,100 houses for South Gloucestershire in the 15years from 1996, a cut in the Government's demand for 21,600.

The total for all four of the Avon unitary authorities was set at50,200 - less than the Government's proposal of 54,300 but more thanthe councils' figure of 43,600.
